As we step into the blossoming season of spring, the essence of sustainability permeates our thoughts and actions. Sustainability isn't merely a concept; it's a commitment to nurturing our environment, economy, and communities for a thriving future. In this month's newsletter, we invite you to join us in fostering a greener, more resilient world. Let's embrace sustainability not just as a belief but as a proactive endeavor to safeguard our planet and enhance our quality of life.
It’s very hard to find someone who openly proclaims to be against sustainability. Being that frank and honest would be very bold and frowned upon. Being FOR sustainability seems to be acceptable and inclusive. Even if they don't really understand the definition, it has become a buzz word, just like going green.
So, let's even the playing field and start with some definitions:
In simple terms, sustainability has to do with what we do now so that we minimize the negative impact to the environment in the future. That includes the interconnected domains of ecology, economics, politics and culture.
Someone might say that they are FOR sustainability but not necessarily WITH sustainability which would entail taking an active role and conducting oneself accordingly.
So, with all that said, I will ask the question again: are you FOR sustainability or are you WITH sustainability? When you watch a sport from the sidelines, and your favorite team wins, you can say " We won!" and nothing happens even if you had no impact whatsoever on the final score.
When it comes to sustainability, watching from the sidelines and just saying you are for it is not enough. It really means that you are against it since you are not doing your share to reduce your carbon footprint today and minimize the negative impact that your presence has on the environment, today and in the future.
It sounds harsh but it’s the truth.
